James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain,” arguably one of the greatest songs ever written. Seems like most of us are somehow connected to this timeless gem. I have always loved its beautiful melody framed by the haunting storyline, and powerful lyric. I decided to give it a go in my “Blueprints” cover song series. I’ve slowed it down and took it for a bit of a left turn. We released it today - it’s available to wherever you listen. Hope you dig. Link in bio!

In honor of Cindy Walker’s induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame❤️

Donn’s Depot is an old train car that somewhere along the way disguised itself as a legendary dive bar in Austin, Texas. It perches up on blocks right off 5th street, just on the edge of downtown. Hi-rise apartments now tower it in the modern era, but the doors have remained open since 1972, grandfathered in by some merciful higher power. During my tenure down in Austin, I would frequent this joint in the wee small hours. It had a pull that rivaled the tides and the moon. Time stands still at Donn’s. The miraculous dingy wall to wall carpeted floors, the old chestnut wrap around bar, the shuffling feet upon a worn parquet dance floor, the faint smell of slightly burned popcorn, the mumbles and murmur of slurred conversations, and a calmness so palpable it could magically cool your jets from whatever kind of stressful day you may have had.

Once upon a time on Monday nights, Chris Gage, a local soulful singer and stellar musician, held court on piano—a weekly residency. I was just getting started in the business, and I would prop myself up at the bar and sponge it all in. Chris could play it all. Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock, Folk. He knew every tune under the sun. One serendipitous night, he hit me with a cannonball. I vividly remember him playing Ray Charles’ soulfully stamped version of “You Don’t Know Me” written by the incomparable Cindy Walker. It left such a lasting mark on me. The beautiful haunting melody, the lyric, the chords, the blues, the feeling…all of it. I dug up Ray’s version, and sat with it for hours upon hours, trying to find my way with it. One of those Monday nights, Chris graciously invited me up to play with him, and we dialed up this number. I sang “You Don’t Know Me” for the first time and I will never forget the feeling. It unlocked something in me that I was unaware was within. This song became a staple in my set for years, and it always takes me back to that slow Monday night at Donn’s Depot crowded around that baby grand, singing it to a few barflys at the witching hour of a glorious morning.

Together again this morning with the family to pla

Together again this morning with the family to play some music. I am always in awe of these people, but sometimes it really hits me how truly fortunate I am to be a part of this. Today was one of those days. This is an arrangement to "Magnolia" that my father wrote featuring him on cello, mom, sister and niece on violin, my uncle on accordion, and our honorary Laura Boswell on guitar and vocals. The Walker Family Band plays a concert this Saturday night in Black Mountain at @blackmountainarts at 7pm, and I'm going to jump in there with them for a few. Join us!
